USD/JPY Analysis: Key Levels Ahead of FOMC Rate Decision

The USD/JPY pair experienced limited momentum during recent trading, advancing by only 5 pips after testing the 163.63 level despite an upward cross on the MACD indicator. Market focus now turns to the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) interest rate decision, policy statement, and press conference. The outcome will be critical in shaping expectations for US interest rate differentials relative to Japan.

From a fundamental standpoint, USD/JPY remains sensitive to US bond yields and policy divergence. A hawkish stance or policy tightening from the Fed could widen yield differentials and push the dollar higher. However, rapid appreciation raises the risk of Bank of Japan (BoJ) currency intervention. Conversely, a dovish tone from the FOMC would likely trigger a downward reversal, reducing upward pressure on the pair.

Bullish Trading Scenarios

The primary buy scenario targets an entry around 163.75, with an upside target of 164.31. Near 164.31, traders may consider closing long positions and opening short positions to capitalize on an anticipated 30–35 pip pull-back. Before buying, traders should confirm that the MACD indicator is above the zero line and beginning to rise.

An alternative long scenario activates if the price tests the 163.51 level twice consecutively while the MACD indicator is in oversold territory. This structure would signal limited downside potential and a potential upside reversal toward 163.75 and 164.31.

Bearish Trading Scenarios

The primary sell scenario triggers on a breakdown below 163.51, targeting the key support level at 162.83. Upon reaching 162.83, short positions should be closed, with an opportunity to open long positions expecting a 20–25 pip bounce. Entry requires confirmation that the MACD indicator is below zero and turning downward.

An alternative short scenario occurs if the price tests 163.75 twice consecutively while the MACD is in the overbought zone. This setup limits upside momentum and favors a decline back toward 163.51 and 162.83. Due to heightened volatility around major central bank announcements, strict risk management and stop-loss orders are strongly advised.
