USD/JPY Preview: BOJ Expected to Pause Ahead of December Decision

BOJ October Policy Pause Expected Following September Hike

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is widely expected to keep its monetary policy settings unchanged at its October meeting. Following a rate increase to 1.25% in September, central bank officials are adopting a wait-and-see stance to evaluate the impact of higher borrowing costs on lending, consumer demand, and corporate investment.

Inflation Trends Support Medium-Term Tightening

Japan's recent inflation data supports the case for eventual rate normalization. Nationwide core CPI, excluding fresh food, accelerated to 2.1% year-over-year in September from 1.7% in August, while the index excluding fresh food and energy rose to 2.4%. Services inflation also picked up to 1.5%, up from 1.2% previously. While the latest Tankan survey shows elevated corporate inflation expectations, the lack of immediate acceleration justifies a temporary pause.

December Rate Hike Expectations in Focus

Financial markets currently price in roughly an 80% probability of another rate hike at the BOJ's December meeting. Because a October pause is fully priced in, USD/JPY price action will depend on updated staff projections and Governor Kazuo Ueda's tone. Any signals reflecting hesitation regarding a December rate increase could trigger downside pressure on the yen, lifting the USD/JPY pair.

Tokyo CPI Release to Serve as Key Pre-Meeting Trigger

Hours before the interest rate decision, Japan will publish critical macroeconomic data, including retail sales, industrial production, unemployment, and the Tokyo CPI for October. Consensus forecasts project Tokyo core CPI to slow to 2.6% from 2.7%, and sub-core CPI to decline to 2.7% from 3.0%. A sharper-than-expected deceleration in metropolitan inflation would reinforce a cautious posture from the BOJ.

USD/JPY Outlook Ahead of Press Conference

Concerns surrounding elevated imported energy prices and weakening domestic purchasing power may prompt the central bank to maintain a cautious tone. If Governor Ueda highlights risks to private consumption rather than persistent inflation, market participants may scale back December rate hike bets. Such a scenario would likely weaken the yen, while a hawkish reaffirmation of the tightening path could bolster yen demand.
