USD/JPY Analysis: Key Technical Levels Ahead of US Labor Data

Fundamental Drivers: Interest Rate Differentials and Economic Data

USD/JPY price dynamics remain heavily influenced by the interest rate gap between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan (BoJ). Japanese economic data released this morning showed nominal wages increased by 4.6% year-over-year in September, exceeding expectations of 3.8% and the previous reading of 3.9%, matching July's rate of 4.7%. This strengthening wage growth reinforces arguments for further monetary policy tightening by the BoJ, whose policy rate currently stands at 1.25% following an 8–1 vote to maintain rates on October 30. Market consensus points toward a potential rate hike at the December 17–18 meeting.

Despite potential BoJ tightening, the US Federal Reserve maintains a significantly higher policy rate of 3.75%–4.00%, leaving a substantial rate differential of 2.5–2.75 percentage points in favor of the US dollar. If the upcoming US labor report reveals nonfarm payroll gains exceeding 65,000 and average hourly wage growth of 0.3%, expectations for sustained higher Fed rates will strengthen. This outcome would likely push Treasury yields higher, driving USD/JPY toward the psychological 160.00 resistance level where intervention risks increase. Conversely, a weak US jobs report would bring BoJ tightening expectations to the forefront, benefiting the yen. Remarks from BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda scheduled for later in the session will also be monitored for policy guidance.

During the early trading session, USD/JPY tested the 158.00 level as the MACD indicator crossed upward from the zero line, confirming a buy entry signal. The pair subsequently advanced toward the initial target of 158.33 before consolidating ahead of major fundamental releases.

Intraday Trading Strategy and Key Levels

Buy Scenario #1: Traders can consider long positions upon a confirmed breakout above 158.49, targeting an initial objective of 158.86. At the 158.86 level, long positions should be closed, and short positions opened to capture a projected 30–35 point pullback. This scenario requires strong US fundamental data and MACD confirmation above the zero line.

Buy Scenario #2: Long entries may also be considered if price tests the 158.23 level twice consecutively while the MACD indicator resides in oversold territory. This technical configuration limits downside momentum and targets an upward correction toward 158.49 and 158.86.

Sell Scenario #1: Short positions can be initiated upon a sustained breakdown below 158.23, with a primary downside target of 157.87. At 157.87, short positions should be exited, and long positions taken immediately to target a 20–25 point bounce. Sellers should ensure the MACD indicator is below the zero line prior to entry.

Sell Scenario #2: A secondary selling opportunity exists if price completes a double test of 158.49 while the MACD indicator is overbought. This setup signals limited upside potential and targets corrective declines toward 158.23 and 157.87.
